WebJan 13, 2008 · 92z28400sbc. Hey guys I've got a problem getting my 400 to crank up. My starter is grinding the flexplate and it has chipped a few teeth but most of the teeth are still good. I've tried shimming it and got it to the point where it catches for a second, then it starts grinding again. Just wondering if you guys have any experience with this and ... WebMar 23, 2006 · 33,843 Posts. #3 · Mar 21, 2006. I would wager its a 168-teeth (large, ie, 14-inch diameter) flywheel. Look at the starter mounting bolts. If they are straight across and of different lengths, then the flexplate is a small one, 153-teeth, 12 3/4 inch diameter. If the bolts are of the same length and staggered, then the flexplate is a large one.
